How sweet,
of course it's a Ladies' Seat
But come now, how often does a man
in a Delhi bus
give it up?
I don't care,
I'm not political
except in passing
(I wonder whether I should get toSo I sit down,
sit when I pay the same
as the standing men).
Eight thousand rupees' worth of music in my ears
and obscure novel in hand.
Hand, hand.
No, no, it's just his polythene bag
Come now, everyone's not out to eve-tease.
Hand, hand.
So it wasn't the polythene bag.
That was just a convenient cover
For a hand
reaching where it shouldn't.
Pussy?
Private parts?
Boobs?
Who makes these words?
I can't tell you where his hand went
My language has no word
that is not either funny or abusive.
Come, come,
check,
go, look in your dictionary
I bet your language also has none.
I got up,
vacated my Ladies' Seat,
my right as a lady
to be touched,
felt,
pawed,
come, come,
it's free for all.
Well almost.
Seven bucks from here to CP is pretty reasonable,
Don't you think?

i had heard Parigya tell me about this poem.its great... i really like the sarcasm and the last line. and Especially the bits where you question language and vocabulary. :)
arpita
Thank you! You'll probably see it in the next Jabberwock too.
Jo
biting!
Thank you, I hoped it would be. I hate having to resign myself to this kind of thing being a part of the experience of Delhi.
Its not just Delhi really. Its an ugly urban reality, the anonymity it affords us.
I remember watching a documentary recently, about women being groped on trains in Japan. Its quite endemic over there. Young professionals, out of work middle aged men, all sorts of people seem to be doing it. There is no predictable profile.
Their solution, women only carriages.
shocking. tragic. pungent.
well written.
Siyaah,
Thanks for dropping by! I'm glad this one is getting read!
i resent this slightly.
Nakashi asked me if I have a short story for the Jabberwock, and when I told her, that I could take something from my blog and give it, she said, the editors would have an issue!!! (I just realised the double nature of that statement)
Pah.
about time you said it love :)
the rest is history... is it a wonder i cant get myself on a bus unless u are there!!
